Day 12 - St. George, Grenada
Grenada is the last and probably the most memorable Caribbean island nation visited on this world cruise. It has a similar heritage and history not unlike others we visited. Yes, I could say it is the spice capital of the world but everyone probably knows that. I could highlight their 1910 foot volcano and rain forest with 160 inches of annual rain, but that can be discovered with a Google search. More importantly, unknown to both you and Google is our Grenadian tour guide "Clever" Trevor.
Trevor talked about much in those four short hours. The following are topics I found memorable and worth sharing.
Along our journey Trevor pointed out locations with new homes, areas of new industries and even new government buildings. What most locals didn't realize is they were financed by the Chinese government. There are no free rides in this world. He pointed out that was a lot investment and questioned what the Chinese would required in return.
We passed a wall with graffiti which included the phrase "Thank you America. We love you". Trevor pointed out it was painted by local citizens back in 1983 in appreciation to America's response. That seemed strange as the historical opinion is America invaded Grenada and had no business interfering with another nation's civil unrest.
Trevor explained there was civil unrest. Their second prime minister enjoyed the power associated with leadership and decided to stay in office. Although elections were held, strong opponents with overwhelming support continued to loose elections. Those with opposing views often became political prisoners. Outside influence in their local government from both communist Cuba and Russia was obvious.
In Trevor's opinion, America did not invade Grenada, America was invited. The people were proud of President Reagan and the American people who came when asked to fight back the communist Cuban and Russian attempt to take control of their government and country.
Trevor is a sincere man and grateful father. History is most accurate when told by those that lived the experience. Trevor and his family lived the history.
In closing Trevor asked us to share our experience with our friends so they too might travel to Grenada for a visit. On the way back to the ship we all sang "Don't Worry Be Happy" led of course by Trevor.
